General guidelines

  • Aim: To provide an index for names appearing in published writings (mainly related to Middle-earth) by J.R.R. Tolkien lacking an index.
  • The Tolkien Index is only a page reference index, not a dictionary or glossary. In general, only such names which are found as entries in, for example, The History of Middle-earth Index, will appear in the Tolkien Index database.
